Sweden: Meet the artists of Melodifestivalen’s first semi-final

Melodifestivalen 2017 kicks off this Saturday and we are going to take a closer look of the first seven artists that will compete for the ticket to Kyiv.

The first semi-final takes place in Gothenburg on 4th February at 20:00 CET.

There are some familiar faces returning this year and among them, two Eurovision winners. Let’s see how the first semi looks like.

Boris René – «Her Kiss»

Boris makes a comeback in Melodifestivalen after finishing 10th in 2016’s final with «Put Your Love On Me». This year he enters the contest with «Her Kiss» written by the same composers as his previous entry. He describes his song with the words «high pace», «emotions» and «love». Boris was born in Kongo in 1991 but moved to Sweden when he was 2 years old.

Adrijana – «Amare»

Adrijana is a debutant to Melodifestivalen and has been involved in the music industry for only a year. Her entry is called «Amare» and it’s a hip hop/r’n’b and pop song. «I write my songs myself because I want to be able to feel that I mean what I am singing about. When the song was ready, we felt that it’s going to be a hit and people kept telling me to enter Melodifestivalen with it.» she says. When asked to describe her song with three words, she used «funny», «different» and «love». Adrijana was born in 1997, has roots in FYROM and is planning to release an EP in 2017.

Dinah Nah – «One More Night»

Dinah Nah is another returning artist. She debuted in Melodifestivalen 2015 with the dance song «Make Me La La La» and took the 12th place in the final. This year she comes back with «One More Night». «It is an uptempo and really happy song with positive energy. I get butterflies in my stomach when I hear it and I hope that the audience will feel the same. It’s definitely a «Dinah Nah sound» but it differs in many ways compared to «Make me la la la». I would describe it with «happiness», «energy» and «love».» she says. Dinah Nah was born in 1980 and resides in Stockholm.

De Vet Du – «Road Trip»

De Vet Du is one of Sweden’s most booked live acts with over 120 000 followers and 30 million views on YouTube. They debut in Melodifestivalen 2017 with the song «Road Trip». «This is so cool! Everyone says that Melodifestivalen is the best thing you can do in Sweden when it comes to music.» They describe the song as «high pace», happy and humorous.

Charlotte Perrelli – «Mitt Liv»

Charlotte Perrelli is no new face to Melodifestivalen fans but not even to Eurovision fans as she represented Sweden twice and won the contest in 1999 with «Take Me To Your Heaven». In 2008 she finished 18th in the final with «Hero». However, she failed to win Melodifestivalen the third time she entered. In 2012 she competed with «The Girl» and finished 5th in the semi-final. This year she comes back with a song in Swedish. Charlotte wrote the lyrics to «Mitt Liv» (My Life) herself and she describes it as, simply, «her life». «I chose to come back with a song in Swedish because it is about my life and this time I actually have something to tell. And your story is much stronger when you tell it in your mother tongue.» Charlotte describes the song with the words «honest», «self-disclosure» and «vulnerable».

Ace Wilder – «Wild Child»

Ace Wilder is back and this time she hopes «third time’s the charm». Ace made her debut in 2014 with «Busy Doin’ Nothing'» and finished second with two points less than Sanna Nielsen. Last year she tried her luck again with «Don’t Worry» with which she got the third place. Ace had actually sent «Wild Child» last year to SVT but they chose «Don’t Worry» so when asked if she wanted to give «Wild Child» to another artist, she said that it’s too personal and it’s best if she’s the one to perform it. She describes the song with the words «Rio» and «jungle» and says that it’s about daring to plunge into the world, the jungle, the unknown.

Nano – «Hold On»

Nano is another debutant in this year’s Melodifestivalen. He’s new to the music industry as he only released his first song two years ago. «»Hold On» is all about love. I want to motivate people for the better and give hope. I want to bring out my text and my message and sing with emotions and be myself. The message is in several parts, it’s about fighting in life, smile even during the rough days, believing in yourself, be patient. The song gives me motivation and I hope that others will get the same feeling.»
