Lithuania: Eurovizija round 5 to be aired today

Lithuania’s Eurovizija now comes to the second phase of the contest. Each contestant has now qualified through at least one round of competition. Heat 5 takes 12 of the remaining 24 singers and will cut them in half after giving out points Eurovision-style. The judges, Darius Uzkuraitis, Ramunas Zilnys, Nomeda Kazlaus and Gintaras Rinkevičius gave their points and comments in a prerecorded show this week. The public will get their chance to view the performances today …….

  • E.G.O. «My Story»

First up was boybad E.G.O. While the judges were overall happy with the boys, their vocal power and lack of experience had a few on the panel wondering if the group is ready for Eurovision.

  • Benas Malakauskas «Rolling»

Zilnys commented that Benas was very similar to Franz from Sweden, and that could be a detrimental comparison if he were to be chosen for Lithuania this year. Kazlaus felt Benas was maybe too inexperienced for the adult Eurovision contest, but gave the singer encouragement to continue his career.

  • Otreya «Last Two Weeks»

Kazlaus felt the singer was breathless due to overactive choreography, with Uzkuraitis and Rinkevičius both admitting to being underwhelmed by the performance on this evening.

  • Edgaras Lubys «Could It Be?»

Rinkevičius praised the addition of choreography to this performance and liked the song as well. Kazlaus commented that Edgaras was one of her favorite vocalists, but did call for cleaner intonation. Zilnys commented on how “Eurovision” the song was, strange in some ways, but very pop in others.

  • Milda Martinkėnaitė & Saulenė Chlevickaitė «Paperheart»

The girls added a graffiti style and theme to the performance this week. Darius Uzkuraitis felt the song was weak after the first minute, and didn’t feel that the visuals that were added fully made sense to the song. Rinkevičius also disliked the graffiti elements and felt the overall package didn’t make the right impression.

  • Ieva Zasimauskaitė «You Found Me»

Zilnys heavily praised Ieva, saying she was a “strong contender” to win the contest. Kazlaus added Ieva was the best singer of the night, the only performer to fully convey the message of her song to the audience.

  • Gytis Ivanauskas (Lolita Zero) «Get Frighten»

Zilnys admitted to being fascinated to see how far the demon-horned Lolita would go in the competition, but was completely sure the song should not go to Kiev. Uzkuraitis agreed, saying that even though Eurovision has seen it’s share of drag performers, this one maybe wasn’t ready for the Eurovision stage. Kazlaus, having only viewed the “Get Frighten” spectacle for the first time was still enjoying the novelty of it, but admitted she wasn’t convinced it was something to go all the way.

  • Valdas Lacko «It’s So Unfair»

Kazlaus said that Valdas had, “room to improve,” with the other judges singling in on Valdas’ pronunciation problems in English. Zilnys still felt the singer had a strong performance and that the issues with pronunciation could be addressed.

  • Paula «Let U Go»

Paula’s energetic song was good, but not enough to get Rinkevičius to dance, and he said the performance possibly overcompensated for the lack of song quality. Uzkuraitis disagreed, “I have no doubt that this song should be the next stage…Such songs like this are popular and fashionable.”

  • Gražvydas «Paint the Sky Blue»

Kazlaus praised Gražvydas’ vocals, but the rest of the judges felt the performance was lacking to the point that the ‘banal’ song was not good enough to show of the singer’s talent according to Zilnys. He hoped the singer would return next year with a better composition.

  • Fusedmarc «Rain of Revolution»

Here, Kazlaus encouraged working on the vocal quality, saying that the talent was there, but not the polish. Rinkevičius liked the song but felt the overall performance was possibly missing some element, some, ‘fire.’

  • Gabrielius Vagelis «Feel Myself Free»

Gabrielius was commended for his ability to write songs, and Kazlaus did enjoy the singer’s voice somewhat, but Zilnys compared the look of the singer to Poland’s Michal Szpak and spared little criticism for the song saying, “I’m not saying that the song [is] ugly, but it is not very strong.”

In the end, one of the main points this round of Eurovizija showed is that keeping a performance fresh and interesting for the judges takes a strong effort by the contestants. Many who did well in the first two rounds found themselves receiving poor critiques from the judges this time. E.G.O. had placed in the middle of the points last time, but after the level of the contest rose in this round, they received only 2 points from the judges. Milda Martinkėnaitė & Saulenė Chlevickaitė who received the same points in their round as E.G.O. fared even worse, coming in last with just a single point.

Ieva Zasimauskaitė & Fusedmarc were the judges’ favorites of the night, receiving the 12, and 10 points, respectively. Surprisingly, Gytis Ivanauskas (Lolita Zero), having not seemingly impressed the judges enough, scored 7 points, more than likely assuring her a place in the next round considering her favor with the televoters. That is – provided that the novelty hasn’t work off for them as it did for the judges.

The show begins at 20:00 CET and you are encouraged to watch it live on the LRT feed. If you’d like to watch more than one show today, try out ESC+Plus Live Feeds.
