Kevin Borg: «I wanted the lyrics to have a story, somewhat haunting and romantic at the same time» (Maltese finalist – Interview)

ESC+Plus has talked to Kevin Borg, finalist of this year’s Maltese national selection for Eurovision. The singer will perform «Follow» in the final of MESC 2017 set to take place on February 18th.

ESC+Plus: Hello! First of all, thank you so much for your time and congratulations on having been selected to take part in the Maltese national selection for Eurovision 2017!

Can you tell us about you, your musical career and important achievements?

Kevin Borg: First I would like to thank you for this interview and the importance you give to promoting us artists and for that I am very grateful. I am so grateful as well to have had more than one highlight so far.

The moment they announced me as the Swedish Idol Winner was one of my first and big ones having won with 85% of the votes. More great things followed as I toured in many places around the world with over 400 concerts having shared the stage and worked with the likes of Jordin Sparks, Desmond Child, Richard Marx etc ..

I’ve written and produced 7 most sold albums in Japan, I have managed to achieve a Platinum Album, Platinum SIngle ,Gold Album and Gold Single, 7 Number Ones on Itunes in various countries around the world having sold more than a million copies together, I’ve had the 20th most sold song in the world with such artists as Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry trailing behind and I have had a number one on the biggest music charts in the world – The World Billboard Chart. Also I’ve written and produced my previous entry Needing You together with great colleagues and I’m very happy and grateful to have over 2,5 million listeners together on Spotify as well !

ESC+Plus: What impelled you to take part in “MESC 2017”?

Kevin Borg: The MSFE is a great show which has become better with the years and last year I asked my colleague that I wanted to do this especially for my awesome fans so we decided to give it a try 🙂

ESC+Plus: How did you feel when you knew you had qualified for the final? Did you expect it?

Kevin Borg:  When you submit a song into a competition you have absolutely no idea what will happen so I was very excited and nervous to hear if I had made it and I did hehe 🙂

ESC+Plus: What would it mean to you to represent Malta?

Kevin Borg:  It would mean a lot to represent Malta in such a big show !

ESC+Plus: Can you tell us about your song? What is the story behind the lyrics?

Kevin Borg: I wrote and composed the song together with my colleague Simon Gribbe. I wanted the lyrics to have a story and be somewhat haunting and romantic at the same time. It’s about this person who loses his girl but he can bring his dream to life so he drams to try and bring her back but has to be careful not to dream for too long otherwise he would die himself although he loves her so much that is ready for that too.

«I WILL FOLLOW YOU TONIGHT EVEN IF I WON’T BE ALIVE». The lyrics have a nice twist at the end because when he wakes up, there she is sleeping by his side so he has managed :).

ESC+Plus: Why do you think your song has to be selected for Kiev? What are you strengths to reach the top in the competition?

Kevin Borg:  I love this song and I cannot really say more than that I hope everyone likes it as much as I do 🙂

ESC+Plus: Do you usually watch Eurovision? What is your favorite song in the history of the  competition?

Kevin Borg:  I’ve watched Eurovision quite many times and I really like it. There’s always that song you keep in mind .. for example Undo with Sanna Nielsen (Sweden) who’s also a friend of mine. Than I really like keep me in mind with Mike Spiteri (Malta) :).

ESC+Plus: If you could choose a Eurovision former participant to sing along with, who would it be?

Kevin Borg: I think it might be Sanna Nielsen since Abba is impossible to get together hehe.

ESC+Plus: Finally, can you send a message for our readers and Eurovision fans?

Kevin Borg: I would like to send my best regards and lots of love to all your readers and Eurovision fans out the thanking them for the great support. I wish each and every one of you a wonderful 2017 full with Joy, Happiness and mostly good health !
